先週、本校に長年通ってくれている生徒のAさんととても興味深いレッスンをしました。彼女は日本の英語教材に載っていたある英文を見せてくれました。その文は後ほど紹介しますが、私はAさんとの会話の中であることに気が付きました。名詞の数量を比較する「as 〜 as」構文の使い方について、多くの日本人が誤解しているようなのです。
そこで今回は、「as ~ as」をネイティブスピーカーのように使う方法をテーマに、名詞の数量に関しての比較表現など、よく使う構文をたくさん紹介したいと思います。

「as ~ as」の使い方はちょっと難しいかもしれませんが、ネイティブが日常よく使う構文です。英語学習者のみなさんは自然に使えるように覚えた方がいいでしょう。
私もこの「as ～ as」構文は難しいと感じることが多く、初中級〜上級レベルのクラスでかなり早い段階から教えています。また、生徒さんがスムーズに使えるようになるまで何度も復習するのですが、それまでふつう4、5回かかります。
では早速、この文法の構造を見てみましょう。
※注：この記事では、自然でネイティブな英語表現をたくさん紹介します。英文を読んだ後（できれば声に出して）、同じ構造を使いながら単語を変え、あなたオリジナルの文を作って紙に書いてみてください。 このテクニックは、新しい言語・難しい言語の理解と記憶を深めるのにとても役立ちます。私自身、新たな言語を学ぶ時にはこの方法を使いますし、すべての生徒さんに勧めています。
1. シンプルで基本的な「... as 形容詞・副詞 as ...」
日本のほとんどの学生さんや先生がよく知っていると思いますが、まずはこのベーシックな構造から始めましょう。ただ気をつけてほしいこととして、このイコール関係の構文は、この後紹介する他の構文に比べて使用頻度がかなり低いと感じます。
何か2つの物や事、2匹の生き物、2人の人が同じ特徴を持っていたり、同じように○○をすると言いたい時、「as ～ as」を形容詞や副詞と一緒に使います。自然な文章をいくつか紹介しますので、音読して練習してみてください。
Mary is tall. She is as tall as most of the boys in the class.
African elephants are huge animals. Males are as heavy as 4 medium-sized cars.
The weather this week is going to be as bad as last week.
I don’t think Nadal is playing as well as he was last year.
Satoshi speaks English as well as most native speakers.
Did you see the video of the South African rugby player trying to run as fast as a cheetah? Of course he failed but the event was to raise money for cheetah conservation.
2. 「... as 形容詞・副詞 as 可能性...」
この構文は、能力や可能性を表す単語とよく一緒に使われます。かなり一般的な構文なので、いくつか例を挙げてみましょう。特に「as possible」は非常によく使われます。
I got here as fast as I could.
You are late for the meeting, please try and get here as soon as possible.
She shops as fast as possible on Sunday because she wants to spend time with her family.
I advise you to read as fast as you are able to in your first try and then read slower the second time.
You should retreat as slowly and as calmly as you can if attacked by a dog.
** ASAP (As soon as possible) -> Please could you respond to me ASAP.
3. 等しくない2つのものに対して使う「... not as 形容詞・副詞 as ...」
「as ～ as」の否定文は、ネイティブスピーカーが最もよく使う用法の一つです。みなさんも会話の中でスムーズに使えるよう、しっかりと頭に刻んでください。以下では、この構文を使った基本的な文いくつかを、別の表現を使った同じ意味の文とともに紹介します。
Nagoya is not as big as Tokyo. ( = Nagoya is smaller than Tokyo)
Generally speaking, the food in England is not as good as the food in France. (The food in France is better than the food in England)
Surprisingly, Zimbabwe is not as hot as Japan in summer. (Zimbabwe is cooler than Japan in summer)
Skiing is not as hard as snowboarding at first. (Skiing is easier than snowboarding at first)
Lewis Hamilton is not driving as well as he was two years ago (Lewis Hamilton was driving better two years ago than he is now)
English is not as difficult as you think, you just have to practice daily. (English is easier than you think, you just have to practice daily)
もう一度言いますが、この構文は非常によく使われます。使い方をよく覚えておいてください。
4. 比較の質問文で使う「... as 形容詞・副詞 as ...?」
もう一つ紹介するのは、形容詞や副詞を使った疑問形の「as ～ as」。これもネイティブスピーカーがよく使います。以下の会話例から学んでください。
Yuki: You have sushi in France? Wow, I didn't know that. Is it
as good as
sushi in Japan?
Garance: No, unfortunately it is almost never
as good as in Japan.
Taro: Is your life in Japan as good as your life was in
America?
Brian: Yes definitely, actually it is often better than my life back home.
Yuna: On the highways in France do you drive
as slowly as you do in Japan?
Michelle: No we don’t. We drive much faster. The speed limit on the highway
in France is 130 km/hr.
Hiroko: It’s freezing today! Is winter in Canada
as cold as winter in Japan?
Carina: Yes it definitely
is. Actually winter in Canada is much colder than in Japan. Sometimes the
temperature drops to -40ºC.
紙を用意して「as ～ as」を使った質問をいくつか書きだし、日本と自国の違いについて英語の先生に尋ねてみるのもいいと思います。XLingualでもこのような比較表現を使い、いつも楽しく会話をしています。
5. 名詞の数量を比較する「...as many (＋名詞) as...」「...as much (＋名詞) as...」
さて、「as ～ as」の使い方において、日本で英語を学ぶ多くの方にとって理解が難しいであろう部分に入ります。こちらの説明がみなさんの助けになれば幸いです。
最初にお話しした、生徒のAさんが見せてくれた文章はこんな感じでした。
X I didn't know that one person in France ate vegetables as much as about two English people.
これの何が問題なのでしょうか？実はいくつかあります。
1.
ここでは「野菜」の数を比較しています。最後の「s」から分かるように、vegetableは可算名詞です。可算名詞には「much」ではなく「many」を使う必要があります。
2.
「vegetables」は「many」の後に置くべきです。
また、「as much as」を別の意味で使っていることも混乱しやすい理由だと思います。これについては後ほど6でお話します。
つまり、名詞の数を比較する場合、可算名詞には以下の例文のように「as many 名詞 as」を使います。
Aさんが見せてくれた間違いの例と正しく直したもの
X I didn't know that one person in France ate vegetables as much as
about two English people.
O I didn’t know that one person in France eats about
as many vegetables as two people in England.
他の間違いの例と正しく直したものをもう少し紹介します。
X I eat vegetables as many as Ken.
O I eat as many vegetables as Ken.
X I have CDs as many as Ken.
O I have as many CDs as Ken.
X I don’t have money as much as Ken.
O I don’t have as much money as Ken.
練習用に、ネイティブレベルの例文をさらに紹介します。
There aren’t as many people here as yesterday. （peopleはpersonの可算形）
I feel there aren’t as many parks in Osaka as in Nagoya.
（または）
I feel Osaka doesn’t have as many parks as Nagoya.
We don’t catch as many fish as we used to when I was a kid.
Are there as many cafes in New York as there are in Tokyo?
Does your city have as many good, cheap restaurants as we do in Osaka?
数えられない名詞には「as much 名詞 as」を使います。以下は自然な例文です。
My new apartment doesn’t have as much space as my old apartment, but it is more modern.
These days, Shanghai doesn’t have as much air pollution as it used to.
There isn’t as much crime in New York as there used to be.
I have long legs so I hate flying economy class because I don’t have as much legroom as in business class.
Does South Africa have as much corruption as Zimbabwe?
Donald Trump: Do you have as much money as me?
Elon Musk: Yes Donald, actually I have more money than you.
Keiko: Do you have as much personal freedom now as you used to when you were at university?
Taro: No, I don’t because I have more responsibilities these days.

実際に比較したのは「野菜の数」であって「野菜を食べる行為」ではない。そのため「many vegetables」を使うべきです。
しかし、以下の文では、「野菜の数」ではなく「野菜が好きである」という状態（行為）を比較しています。
I like eating vegetables as much as you.

8.何かの上限・下限を表す「as much/many as」
「as much as」や「as many as」は、何かがどれだけ大きいか・どれだけ小さいかを表現する時にも使います。何かの大きさについて読み手・聞き手に想像しやすくする、もしくは上限・下限を表すための比較の文です。
The officials estimated there were as many as 500 people involved in the riots in Dublin.
The sun is estimated to be as much as 100 times wider than Earth.
Stars as much as 100 times larger than our sun have been found.
最後に
